Erasmus gets his way in the end. He is every bit as stubborn as Petronella, in his own more quiet way. And if Petra were being honest, facing the end is made easier with Erasmus by her side, as steadfast as always.

Because they have command of time, Petra and Erasmus take a few final weeks to travel, enjoy fine hotels and great food, to attend plays and operas and take twilight walks, holding hands and accepting for once and for all that their destinies are irrevocably intertwined.

But finally the day comes when they feel they can ignore the future no longer. Sage contracts a solicitor to come to the Paris house two weeks after they transmigrate away. He will be tasked with removing all of the equipment, the alembics and dynamo, and calling the morgue to retrieve the bodies on the table. Then he will keep the keys on file until Wei Boyang calls for them.
