NARRATOR
Having dispatched their errands, Petra and Erasmus spend a final night together. Neither are feeling particularly hungry, but a couple of bottles of wine, some crusty bread and fine cheese make for a fitting repast in front of the fire.

They sit in companionable silence. Their trajectory is set, the time for recriminations and apologies lies in the past and the solid fact of their love is enough to sustain them through the darkest hours. In the morning, they make their way to the laboratory, the original cramped space as foreign to them now as a childhood bedroom - both cramped and familiar.

They stand around the corner of the hall until they see a sprightly young Professor barge through the door in unseemly enthusiasm. They smile wryly at each other, then move to stand just outside the lab, waiting for the flickering to stop.
